New Year...New Coffees (part 1)

Carrie Masek

We have new coffee! Thanks to some coffees coming early, and others showing up later than expected, we brought in a record number of coffees last week. We're about half done cupping them and putting them away, but decided to let you know about them as we go. This post is the first of two about our new coffees.

We received three new crop Indonesian coffees last week. A good thing, too, since we were out of the Organic Timor and down to crumbs for both the Organic Bali and the Organic Java. Every year, growing conditions, rainfall, temperature, etc., as well as the soil composition determine the flavors in the coffee. This was a spicy year for Indonesia, and all our new coffees have pronounced, and delicious, spicy notes.

Oganic Bali Kintamani: This year's crop is even sweeter than last year's, with flavor that reminds us of candied strawberries and watermelon with an interesting cherry licorice twist. A medium (Full City ) roast level, heightens the fruit notes. Try a darker roast level (Vienna or Northern Italian) for a bolder, spicier cup.

Organic Java Dadar: We love this full-bodied, complex coffee! This year's crop features rich dark chocolate notes sweetened by a hint of cherry. Add a spicy, peppery finish for a bold, complex coffee that's great no matter how dark you take it!

Organic Timor Coopertiva: This washed Indonesian coffee is one of our favorites. Full-bodied, rich and sweet, with dark chocolate and caramel sweetness spiced by a lovely cinnamon finish.

Moving to a different continent, we have new Tanzania Peaberry! One of the liveliest coffees, this year's Tanzania Peaberry features lively lemon notes balanced by sweet almond richness and a hint of cocoa.

Finally, the new crop of Kona has arrived. This year's Kona Pahala is sugary sweet with a clean, balanced flavor brightened by a lively spritz of lemon. Sipping this coffee is like having a Hawaiian vacation in your cup. If the cold weather has you longing for a tropical beach, this is the coffee for you!

Keep an eye on the website and our blog for more new coffees next week.

Thanks for reading Coffee by the Blog!
