Spotlight on...Decaf Organic Mexico
Carrie Masek
Decaf coffee has a bad rep. Memes like, “Death before Decaf” proliferate on social media sites, and many assume giving up caffeine means giving up flavor. The reason for this misconception is the process to remove caffeine from green coffee beans also removes flavor compounds. In well-processed decafs, most of the flavor is returned to the beans, but even the best decaf coffees lose a little flavor to the process.
That’s why we only buy decaf coffee from companies that start with high quality, flavorful beans and only use water process decaffeination methods. For more about how the caffeine gets out of the bean, check out our blog post from May 18, 2016.
We had high expectations for this year’s Decaf Organic Mexico. Grown in the Sierra Madre mountains, this decaf has been consistently rich and flavorful. While we fully expected this year’s batch to be equally delicious, we cupped a sample, just to be sure.
Wow! This year’s Decaf Organic Mexico starts with a rich, sweet aroma: a little citrus, a little floral, a lot of chocolate. We all love the soft, smooth mouthfeel, but the rich, well-balanced flavor really surprised us. It took us several rounds of tasting to tease out the different notes: lively herbal/citrus, like lemon verbena, rich cocoa or fudge, and candied nut, like almond praline. The flavors combine into a rich, flavorful and satisfying cup of coffee that made one of our roasters exclaim, “Are you sure this is decaf?”
To prove it, we brewed more and had it with breakfast. After several cups, he was convinced that Decaf Organic Mexico is both decaffeinated and delicious.
If you prefer decaf coffee, or need to switch to decaf later in the day, please give Decaf Organic Mexico a try. A light, City roast level brings out the herbal citrus flavors. A medium roast level, Full City, emphasizes the coffee’s richness. Go even darker for a fuller body and sweeter flavor.
