Spotlight on...Organic Brazil Matas de Minas
Carrie Masek
This week, we’re shining the spotlight on a new coffee from Brazil, Organic Brazil Matas de Minas.
Organic Brazil Matas de Minas is a single estate coffee grown in Minas Gerais, Brazil’s fourth largest state. The area’s hills and uneven terrain keep the farms small by Brazillian standards. The Dutra family started planting coffee on their Fazenda Dutra over 50 years ago. Though the estate now spans 2500 acres, it’s still small enough to allow the Dutra family to focus on producing specialty grade coffee and keeping their coffee at the highest possible quality.
This is the first year the Dutra family’s coffee has been available to us, and we’re so glad we were offered a chance to try it. The coffee blew us away, starting with the rich aroma, chocolate sweetened by a hint of orange blossom. Then we took a sip and the coffee’s smooth, creamy and very heavy body flowed over our tongues, filling our mouths with the flavors of rich chocolate and walnut toffee with just a hint of dark prune sweetness. The rich, sweet finish lingers long after the sip. This is a coffee to drink slowly and savor.
Organic Brazil Matas de Minas is also is a very low acid coffee. Gentle on the stomach, it makes lovely Cold Brew, and is excellent brewed hot. Pick your favorite roast level, this coffee can take them all. We prefer it at a Full City roast level to heighten the coffee’s intense richness, but at a darker (Northern or Southern Italian) roast level it brews into a very smooth, bold cup, that also makes a great single origin espresso.
Have you tried coffee from the state of Minas Gerais? How do you think it compares to other coffees from Brazil or other South American countries? If you have an opinion, please join the conversation and share it on the Facebook thread or in a comment on this blog. Or, if you'd like to share your thoughts with the wider world, leave us a coffee review on Google or on your favorite review site. Not only do we value your opinions, but reviews help more people find us. Help us connect coffee lovers to fresh, quality coffee!
Thanks!
We wish all our customers continued good health during these challenging times.
