A latte for George
Carrie Masek
Today, Friday, February 22, is George Washington’s birthday. If he were alive today, he would be 287 years old. None of us here at Coffee by the Roast are quite that old, but we’e old enough to remember when Washington’s birthday was a federal holiday. Only recently, we discovered that our first president and his wife, Martha, not only enjoyed coffee, but preferred it sweetened and often blended it with milk. That made us smile, because our favorite Washington’s birthday treat is a sweet and milky Cherry Vanilla Latte.
When we were children, one of the stories told about Washington was the apocryphal tale that when he was a young boy, he chopped down his father's favorite cherry tree, but avoided punishment because he was honest enough to admit he was responsible.
A great lesson for children, and a wonderful excuse to enjoy cherries in February: Fresh, if you can find them, in desserts, or (you're like us) in coffee. We think George and Martha would have enjoyed our Cherry Vanilla Latte. Here’s how we make it:
With an espresso machine:
Steam 8 oz of milk
Pull 2 shots of your favorite espresso (ours is Espresso Trieste) and add them to the milk.
Stir in 1 Tb Vanilla Syrup and 1 Tb Cherry concentrate (or syrup if you prefer a sweeter latte)
Enjoy!
Without an espresso machine:
Heat 6 oz cold brew concentrate (or use 6 oz strong-brewed coffee)
Heat 6-8 oz milk
Blend coffee and milk
Stir in 1 Tb Vanilla Syrup and 1 Tb Cherry concentrate (or syrup if you prefer a sweeter latte)
Enjoy!
Do you enjoy sweet, milky coffee drinks? Do you have a story about George Washington or maybe a favorite cherry recipe? If so, please join the conversation and share it on the Facebook thread or in a comment on this blog. Or, if you'd like to share your thoughts with the wider world, leave us a coffee review on Google or on your favorite review site. Not only do we value your opinions, but reviews help more people find us. Help us connect coffee lovers to fresh, quality coffee!
Thanks!
